This up-country retreat sits next to the childhood home of our client. The two-sided lakefront site served as a family ski and lake vacation home for decades. Aiming to move to the property full time, a series of new structures and a new approach to family life and entertaining was envisioned. Collaborating with Marcus Gleysteen Architects, Meridian Construction, Christopher Peacock and Gregory Lombardi Design, the team and client all worked in close collaboration to create a multi-generational heirloom property that respects past years on the lake and forecast the future.
The project consists of a main house, guest house and recreation barn. It is designed to capture expansive lake views, flood the interior with daylight, offer large areas for gathering and intimate areas for family time. The materials reflect the rustic and traditional nature of New Hampshire landscapes, with the refined eye of a modern owner and design team.
Working from the studs in, John Day collaborated with architects Marcus Gleysteen and Chandon Georgian on the see through gas fireplace, floating steel stair with glass wine room below and operable garage doors and interior architecture and finishes. Cast concrete fireplace surrounds and Italian lighting are contrasted by whitewash Montana Timber ceilings and fumed ash flooring. Custom Christopher Peacock millwork, with polished white Statuario marble and nickel accents, offers a blend of transitional design with simple white modernism.
Bringing textures, furniture and memories forward from the past house and creating a modern open interior that is durable and approachable in all seasons, inspired the interior design & decoration. Sandy feet, lake wet dogs and doors all open were items that had to be considered along with bunk rooms for twenty cousins and lounge areas for post skiing nights.
